Bat Access Maintained During Roof Repairs

Our lovely little bat is able to come and go into our roof space both during and after the repairs to the roof and attics.  This has involved installing open slots in the repaired ridge and the occasional gap between tiles.  You can see some of the openings in the picture below.

Bat Access Points

Our bat is a brown long-eared bat.  Long-eared bats feed on moths, beetles, flies, earwigs and spiders in woodland and grassland.  They can fly slowly and “glean” insects resting on foliage.  Sometimes they take larger insects to a place where they can perch to eat them more easily.  They roost mainly in attics and large roof spaces – but our little bat doesn’t roost with us, he or she just pops in from time to time.

What a cutie!

Have you come up with a name for our bat yet?  Drop us a line at thebirchamcentre@gmail.com to tell us what you think he or she should be called…

Our Picture Competition closes on 1 November so if you are under 16 why not create a picture inspired by our little bat.  There will be prizes for the best pictures! Just drop them in at the Bircham Centre Charity Shop:  put your name, age, a contact number and what you think our little bat should be called on the back of your picture.
